The Amazonian Guard was an unofficial name given by Western journalists to an all-female elite brigade of bodyguards officially known as The Revolutionary Nuns. They were tasked with protecting the former leader of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi.
Candidates for the Amazonian Guard were hand-picked by Gaddafi and were required to take an oath of chastity. It’ been reported that Gaddafi believed that an Arab gunman would have difficulty firing at women but in reality the real reason for an all female bodyguard had more to do with his desire to be surrounded by young women. Gaddafi would usually travel with 15 of his Amazonian Guards assigned to security or housekeeping.
In the latter days of the Libyan civil war, reports of abuse has come up. A pattern in the stories from former bodyguards has emerged: The women would be first raped by the dictator and then passed on to one of his sons and eventually to high-ranking officials for more abuse before eventually being let go. Cases of suicide by the members of the brigade has also been alleged.
